Alcohol, sales taxes among local options on Dallas-area cities’ ballots

In addition to school bond elections on Nov. 4, several area cities have elections on such issues as alcohol sales and sales taxes.

Frisco voters will weigh in on late-night alcohol sales. Its bars and restaurants stop serving alcohol at midnight six days a week and at 1 a.m. on Saturdays.

Some now argue that the businesses need the extra hours to stay competitive. Passage of the measure in November would give the authority back to the Frisco City Council, which would ultimately decide whether to allow alcohol sales until 2 a.m.

Sunnyvale has two proposals on the ballot: an item asking for cash to change water suppliers and another to shift about $280,000 a year in sales tax revenue toward streets.

“If voters approve this, we should be able to catch up on and stay ahead of road maintenance,” Mayor Jim Phaup said. “We need to have a strategy, and we haven’t been able to do that.”

Many cities dedicate a portion of sales taxes to streets. By law, they must reapprove the measure periodically. Azle, Cross Roads, Forest Hill and Lavon all have street tax elections Nov. 4. Street work is also part of a $4 million bond item in Cockrell Hill.

Streets are $160 million of Arlington’s $236 million bond proposal. The city’s other items focus on parks and recreation, plus fire and library facilities.

And in Denton, an election was called as nearly 2,000 residents signed a petition calling for a vote to ban fracking inside the city.
