Women’s basketball wins behind Goodwin three-pointer
Tim Cato / Senior Staff Writer
Freshmen guard Loryn Goodwin continued her notable rookie season, burying a game-winning three-pointer to give the Mean Green women’s basketball team a 76-75 win over the University of Louisiana-Monroe on Thursday.
Down by two, Goodwin found herself open in the corner and didn’t hesitate, giving UNT (10-5, 9-7) the lead with three seconds left on the clock. A desperate heave by ULM (8-16, 5-10) as the clock expired was off the mark.
“I’ve been working really hard and it just showed today,” Goodwin said. “We all wanted to win the game.”
Goodwin was already coming off a career game, scoring 26 points and making seven three-pointers in a loss last Saturday to Florida International University. On Thursday, she set a new career mark with 28 points while adding three steals and hitting seven more threes.
It is the first time in UNT history that a player had consecutive games with seven three-pointers. Goodwin now has 59 three-pointers for the year, third best in school history with four games left in the season.
Head coach Mike Petersen said it “has been a while” since he’s seen a freshman play like Goodwin. Petersen, who has twenty years of head coaching experience, had a simple message for the freshman after the game.
“I’m going to tell her to keep shooting,” Petersen said. “How’s that for good coaching?”
Goodwin got help from the team’s other freshman starter, forward Alexis Hyder. She picked up her sixth double-double of the year with 23 points and 14 rebounds and leads all Sun Belt freshmen in rebounding.
After building an eight-point lead with a 14-3 run to begin the second half, the Mean Green gave the lead back with just under 10 minutes left. The team would not lead again until Goodwin’s three-pointer.
The win was crucial for the Mean Green to stay in the running for the number one seed in the Sun Belt West Division. The Mean Green is just one game behind the West Division-leading Arkansas State University (13-12, 10-6).
Alabama bound
The Mean Green faces the Troy University (5-19, 2-13) on Saturday, looking for a weekend sweep. Troy only has two conference wins, but one of those wins came on Sunday against the best team in SBC, Middle Tennessee State University.
“They like to get out and go in transition if you don’t play defense and get back,” junior guard Hannah Christian said. “They can also score a lot of points.”
The road game tips off at 5:15 in Troy, Ala.
Just won our game at the buzzer. Great team win on the road. #relieved
