Medical technology company AirStrip and technology giant IBM (NSYE:IBM) have teamed up on a new project intended to improve patient monitoring systems.

San Antonio-based AirStrip will work to develop a mobile monitoring system to help clinicians predict declining health in acute and critically ill patients. Armonk, N.Y.-based IBM (NYSE: IBM) will provide the streaming analytics technology which would allow AirStrip's system to access data from numerous sources in real time.

AirStrip is co-developing the new Acute Care Early Warning System with the University of Michigan Center for Integrative Research in Critical Care. The system will bring together data from electronic medical records, body sensors and other sources with predictive analytics and ultimately could be used to provide doctors with critical health insight through their mobile devices. The system will be designed by AirStrip and the university center with the goal of helping hospitals better manage acutely ill patients.

AirStrip officials say the Acute Care Early Warning System, which will collect and translate structured and unstructured data via the AirStrip ONE platform, could boost early intervention, enhancing critical care delivery, improving patient outcomes and reducing ICU admissions. If the new system proves successful, it could also support hospital-to-home care models.

AirStrip CEO Alan Portela said the collaboration with U-M Center for Integrative Research in Critical Care and IBM could lead to new technology that can "measurably strengthen patient care while addressing real-world challenges faced by providers."
