A vote of the Metro Council Tuesday night paves the way for construction of an $18 million pedestrian bridge that will connect the Gulch and SoBro.

In a 30-7 vote, the council gave final approval to spend about $1 million to acquire the land needed for the bridge, The Tennessean reports. The SoBro end of the bridge will be located south of Cummins Station; in the Gulch, it will be located between Velocity and Pine Street Lofts.

Construction could begin next summer, with a fall 2016 opened planned, The Tennessean reports.

The council had voted 30-2 in February to table the project indefinitely, amid concerns of neglecting infrastructure needs in other parts of Nashville.

Last month, however, Mayor Karl Dean unveiled a plan to pay for the bridge by capturing tax revenue from the properties that will benefit most from the bridge.
