Five Awesome Food Events in Dallas This Weekend, October 16-19
Every Thursday, the Dallas Farmers Market -- newly renovated and bustling with vendors -- stays open late. For vegetable lovers, these extended hours represent a rare opportunity to get their late-night-produce-groove on, while others see the combination of food trucks, an open-air market and beer and wine vendors as prime "milling" territory. So whether you need some fresh tomatoes for your sauce or you just want to get saucy with some tomatoes, Market After Dark is just the event for you.

National Pasta Day, Christmas for marathon trainers and emotional eaters, is here once again. To celebrate, Penne Pomodoro is offering half off any pasta at the Lakewood, Preston and Forest and Snider Plaza locations. You could say this is one offer that's too good to pasta up. Or you could not say that, because that would be pushing things too farfalle.

Here's a puzzle for you: What are Vegetarian, Spicy, Traditional and Wild Card? If you guessed descriptions of my most recent dates then you'd be correct, but if you guessed categories for the Fourth Annual White Rock Local Market Chili Cook-off then you would also be correct. Up to 20 teams will be vying for top honors at this year's competition. But you don't have to be a judge to take part in the tasting. For $5 you can sample it up (just don't forget the antacid chaser.) Tickets can be purchased at the event on the day-of or in advance at the White Rock Local Market (WRLM) information desk. Proceeds benefit the WRLM.

The Cultivate Food, Idea & Music Festival is sponsored by Chipotle, so you know what to expect: There won't be any parking if you go at lunch, you'll have to stand in line behind the guy who is there on behalf of his entire office and there's no way that you'll get through the whole thing without being deluged by a giant blob of guacamole. But then again, if Chipotle is as good at throwing festivals as they are at making burritos, then the looming threat of guac air strikes isn't so bad. Plus, it's free! The festival will feature an array of local food and drink vendors, along with performances by artists such as Sylvan Esso, O.A.R. and Amos Lee. Matt McCallister and Kent Rathbun will also be on hand with four other chefs for demonstrations.

What it be: 2014 Cultivate Food, Idea & Music Festival
When it do: Saturday, Oct. 18 starting at 11 a.m.

Dallas is nary in short supply of meat-based celebrations. If it used to be slowly moving and has since been brought to an internal temperature of 150 degrees, then the great citizens of DFW have no doubt booked a venue, reserved a cover band and thrown a party in its honor. But there will be one festival this Sunday where the only meat you are likely to see is on the front of someone's "Meat is Murder" t-shirt. The annual Texas Veggie Fair aims to promote the veg-lifestyle by featuring vegetarian and vegan food vendors, chef demonstrations, a beer garden and yoga. So go, hippies, go. Tempeh samples await.
