If you're looking for the big bucks in city government, you're not going to find them in politics.

Mayor Alvin Brown is the 21st highest-paid employee in city government — a list that's topped by the district chief medical examiner.

The medical and legal fields, not surprisingly, lead to the highest salaries, with employees in the medical examiner's office and office of general counsel filling out half of the top 20 positions.

Another good option for those seeking a bigger paycheck: economic development. Employees handling those duties land in two of the top five highest-paid jobs.

All told, the city's core payroll — excluding police office and firefighters, as well as the independent authorities — adds up to $107 million. The median employee makes about $34,370, the amount earned by the city's truck technicians and welders.
