More Americans Than Ever Plan To Dress Up For Halloween

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Americans will be shelling out major money for Halloween treats, decorations and costumes this year.
According to the National Retail Federation, 67% of survey respondents will be buying a costume for the holiday – the most ever recorded in the 11-year history of the survey.
Americans will drop about $1.4 billion total on adult Halloween costumes and $1.1 billion on kids’ costumes. Canine costumes will total $350 million.
Another interesting fact: A lot of that costume inspiration is coming from social media, with Pinterest leading the way. More than 11% of those who will wear a costume turned to the site, up from 9% in 2013.
When it comes to sweets, Americans will drop about $2.2 billion, and ghoulish décor isn’t far behind at $2 billion.
On an individual level, the average person will spend $77.52 on Halloween, which is up from 2013’s $75.03.
Total spooky spending will add up to approximately $7.4 billion.
The NRF says more than 6,000 adults were polled during September to come up with the survey results.
