Pittsburgh (CBS HOUSTON) – A late first half meltdown was the catalyst for the third straight defeat for the Houston Texans as they fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers 30-23 on Monday Night Football at Heinz Field.
The Texans, who led 13-0 with 7:16 remaining in the 2nd quarter, turned the ball over twice and allowed the Steelers to score 24 points in less than three minutes of game time to lead 24-13 going into the halftime break.
These mistakes, along with other turnovers and special teams miscues visibly frustrated first-year coach Bill O’Brien throughout the game, and that frustration boiled over in the post game presser.
After initially trying to find some positive by describing the fact that they had a chance at the end of the game, he clearly was not happy with the questions thrown at him regarding the loss or the snowball effect of the 2nd quarter collapse.
“It was 30-23. It wasn’t 50 to nothing.” O’Brien said sharply. “My point is we can’t do that”
O’Brien clarified that they did make several mistakes in the game including the turnovers, special teams miscues, and penalties. However, he continued to re-iterate to the pool of reporters that they weren’t blown out.
“These questions are like we lost 50 to nothing, we lost by a touchdown,” O’Brien snapped. “With all that stuff that we did, we have to improve it. We have to coach it better and we got to play better.”
O’Brien’s emotions ran high throughout the press conference as he was pressed on his comments that despite all the problems the team had in the game, they lost only by a single score. O’Brien would not call anything in the game a positive.
“I think it’s a negative. We lost,” O’Brien said. “It’s a negative. It’s terrible to lose. It’s not good to lose.”
O’Brien then retreated by making the point that the mistakes is what is losing games for the team and not their inability to compete with their opponent.
“My point is to these players in the locker room, is that with all those things that we did wrong, if we can fix those things that we’re doing wrong, especially turning the ball over twice inside the 5-yard line, if we could fix those things, maybe we would have a shot, a better shot to win,” O’Brien said. “It’s not good to come close, there are no moral victories.”
The Texans, (3-4) will travel to Nashville Sunday to face their division rivals, the Tennessee Titans (2-5) for a noon kickoff.
