Energy Plays a Role on “Window in the Waves”

Posted on Latest News on October 13, 2014

Flower Garden Banks, the only naturally occurring coral reef in the entire Gulf of Mexico has lived and prospered for decades as part of an existing oil & gas field.

PBS is premiering the show Window in the Waves on Houston’s KUHT at 7 p.m. on October 22. ANGA member company Apache Corp. used to own one of the platforms that is home to this popular diving and recreational fishing area off the Texas coast. It is a great example of how energy production and nature can and do live in harmony with one another.

Texas LNG, CNG sales outpace state projections

Posted on Latest News on August 26, 2014

Fuel consumption for natural gas vehicles is outpacing state projections for fiscal year 2014.

The Texas Comptroller’s Office projected tax revenue from liquefied natural gas and compressed natural gas to reach $992,000 during this fiscal year, which ends on August 31.  Actual revenues have far exceeded those expectations – totaling more than $2.2 million through July.

What’s driving this growth?

Major commitments from public transport operators like DART and shippers like UPS, as well as growing interest from consumers who recognize the potential cost savings and environmental benefits of this cleaner fuel.

“Natural gas vehicles are becoming mainstream faster than expected,” Railroad Commissioner David Porter said in a statement.  “And there’s plenty of room for growth.”

Texas already leads the way in natural gas vehicle adoption, which means Texans are benefiting from cleaner fuel and increased savings at the pump. Growing consumer and enterprise demand for natural gas means even more opportunities are on the horizon.

As natural gas vehicle use continues to expand, Texans will see more industry jobs, increased state tax revenues and major investments in transportation infrastructure to support new vehicles.

Natural gas, driving America forward

Posted on Latest News on July 1, 2014

Natural gas vehicles (NGVs) and the infrastructure needed to fuel them are on the rise in the U.S., thanks to the convergence of private sector efforts to save money, local governments taking action to improve air quality and an interest to use our domestic energy resources.

Home to several of the nation's main transportation corridors and a booming natural gas industry, it should be no surprise that Texas' is leading the way in NGV adoption.

Clean Energy recently announced the opening of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) fueling station in El Paso, Texas – a significant step for the company and its America’s Natural Gas Highway strategy, as it effectively completes the LNG fueling infrastructure for the I-10 corridor between Houston and Los Angeles.

Another natural-gas-transportation corridor in Texas is the Texas Clean Transportation Triangle (TCTT), which connects Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio and Houston along I-45, I-10 and I-35. The TCTT was created to address poor air quality in Texas’ major metropolitan areas and was signed into law in July 2011. At least 10 percent of the total U.S. transportation sector travels through the TCTT each year, making the legislation a pivotal move for Texas in addressing poor air quality and a significant step for the natural gas industry.

$2,500 Rebate Makes Buying an NGV Even Easier

Posted on Latest News on May 16, 2014

In the market for a new car or truck this year? Consider one powered by natural gas.

If you are looking to purchase or lease a new vehicle, you may qualify for a rebate of up to $2,500 to put toward your new NGV, thanks to renewed efforts by the State of Texas to reduce emissions through increased use of alternative fuel vehicles.

Last week, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) announced that up to $7.7 million from the state’s Texas Emissions Reduction Plan (TERP) will soon be available to help folks across Texas purchase or lease new alternative fuel vehicles, including those powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) (like the new 2014 Ford CNG F-150 or 2014 Honda CNG Civic).  NGVs are a great solution for reducing air emissions because they emit 70% less smog-producing pollutants when compared to traditionally-fueled vehicles.

Applications for TERP’s Light-Duty Motor Vehicle Purchase or Lease Incentive (LDPLI) Program will be accepted now through June 2015, but funding is limited.  As demand for NGVs grows across Texas, programs to incentivize NGV adoption like those established by the Texas Clean Transportation Triangle have seen enormous consumer support and maxed out long before stated deadlines.

Rebates will be allotted on a first-come-first-serve basis to qualified applicants until all funding is depleted OR the limit on the maximum number of vehicles is reached, whichever comes first. Only vehicles sold through a franchised dealer in Texas or leased from a leasing company licensed to do business in Texas may be eligible.

To learn more about TERP’s incentive program and eligibility requirements—including the full list of make and models available under the program—visit the TCEQ website.

To apply for the program, visit terpgrants.org or call 1-800-919-TERP (8377).

With San Antonio’s First CNG Station, the Texas Clean Transportation Triangle is Open for Business

Posted on Latest News on May 14, 2014

Air quality is a top priority for Texas. Wednesday morning, a bipartisan group of legislators, clean air advocates and leaders of the Texas business community celebrated the opening of San Antonio’s first public Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fueling station—a milestone achievement in the Texas Clean Transportation Triangle (TCTT), which is the fastest growing natural gas transportation corridor in the nation.

Natural gas vehicles (NGVs) are gaining traction in the effort to improve urban air quality, but don’t take our word for it—the success of the TCTT speaks for itself.

Part of the Air-Quality Solution
Houston and Dallas currently do not meet federal ozone standards and San Antonio is on the brink of non-attainment, facing costly EPA pollution-control mandates that raise fuel prices and slow economic development.  The TCTT is a key strategy in improving air quality in San Antonio and across the state, as NGVs eliminate 70% of smog-producing pollutants when compared to traditional vehicles.

TCTT is Model for the Nation
As the nation’s top natural-gas producing state, it makes sense (and many cents) for Texans to take pride in the TCTT as an natural gas vehicle success story for other states to follow.  This first-of-its kind program developed collaboratively by a group of bipartisan members of the Texas Legislature and stakeholders to address air-quality in Texas’ major metropolitan areas.  The groundbreaking initiative is solving the “chicken-or-the-egg” challenge to widespread NGV adoption by simultaneously:

  • Providing market certainty by mapping out infrastructure
  • Encouraging fleet expansion and infrastructure investment

We’re thrilled to welcome the newest addition to the TCTT—the first of many natural gas fueling stations planned for the San Antonio area.  Click here for the latest map of all 87 stations in Texas, proving that the TCTT is open for business.

Making Mother’s Day Greener

Posted on Latest News on May 9, 2014

Fresh flower delivery that could help improve air quality? Now that’s a gift that will make mom smile this Mother’s Day.

Saving on transportation costs while reducing emissions is a win-win solution for delivery services across the country, and its especially popular at one enterprising flower shop in Texas.

McShan Florist, a family owned and operated full-service florist located in Dallas, TX, will be making thousands of deliveries around Mother’s Day.  Thanks to a fleet of cleaner-burning, compressed natural gas (CNG) delivery vehicles, they will be minimizing their contribution to urban air pollution.

At one point McShan -- an early pioneer of CNG vehicles and the Texas Clean Transportation Triangle -- had the largest privately held natural gas fleet in the area with 38 vehicles.

Today, McShan Florist is running thousands of deliveries on natural gas while benefitting from lower fuel and operating costs. In fact, many fleets powered by affordable natural gas can save up to 40 percent compared with diesel-fueled fleets.

Greater adoption of natural gas as a transportation fuel will benefit communities across the country. We appreciate businesses like McShan for leading the charge.

Learn more about how companies like McShan Florist are using natural gas-fueled fleet to improve Texas air quality with the Texas Clean Transportation Triangle.
