Technologies Diesel Retrofit Devices
Diesel retrofit devices for after-treatment pollution control can be installed on new or existing vehicles and equipment to reduce particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxides (NOx), hydrocarbons (HC), or carbon monoxide (CO) as well as other air pollutants. The information below provides estimated emission reductions which may be used in the selection of appropriate technologies for air quality programs. Read here

World Health Organization Says Diesel Exhaust Causes Cancer
June 15, 2012 By Stacy Simon; Cross Post October 14, 2014
A group of experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) has classified diesel engine exhaust as a carcinogen – a substance that causes cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which is part of the WHO, based its decision on what it calls “sufficient evidence” that exposure to diesel exhaust causes lung cancer. The new classification moves diesel fuel from the category of “probably carcinogenic” to “carcinogenic.” Read here

Study shows air emissions near fracking sites may pose health risk; They contain hydrocarbons including benzene
3/19/2012 By David Kelly | University Communications
Crosspost by Admin September 21, 2014
The report, based on three years of monitoring, found a number of potentially toxic petroleum hydrocarbons in the air near the wells including benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene and xylene. Benzene has been identified by the Environmental Protection Agency as a known carcinogen. Other chemicals included heptane, octane and diethylbenzene but information on their toxicity is limited. The study also shows increase cancer risks for residents living nearer to the wells as compared to those residing further [away],” the report said. “Benzene is the major contributor to lifetime excess cancer risk from both scenarios.” Read more here

Up in Flames: U.S. Shale Oil Boom Comes at Expense of Wasted Natural Gas, Increased Carbon Dioxide -
Cross post from EarthWorks; August 26, 2014
Earthworks developed a new report showing that by eliminating natural gas waste in
two shale area, the effect would be the same as taking 1.5 million cars off the
road. The report also has an interactive map developed by SkyTruth
showing flaring activity in the U.S. and around the world based on nightly,
infrared satellite data. Read article here

DEMONSTRATING RISKS AND HARMS OF FRACKING (UNCONVENTIONAL GAS AND OIL
EXTRACTION)
By Concerned Health Proffessionals of NY; July 10,2014
Posted by Admin August 11,2014
This report researches the complex and industrialized use of fracking and its impact to the environment. Often research and information is thwarted by the infrastructure that supports gas production and the secrecy that surrounds them. However, this report references scientific, medical and journalistic findings to demostrate the risks and harms of Fracking. By reading this report, the reader will be able to understand the relevance of fracking as it pertains to public health and safety concerns and how it is related to these issues. Fracking the Ocean "What astonishes me about this is that we have done it all before. It is not new news. We have polluted the earth; we have polluted the air; and now, we are repeating exactly the same rationale to justify this initiative and polluting our water, fresh and salt. It makes no sense." ~ Peter Neill Did you Know?
Posted by Admin August 4, 2014. Recently Mansfield passed Ordinance NO: OR-1910-14; This Ordinance added definitions for Electronic Vaping Devices(Electric Cigarettes). Within this ordinance are all the cited investigations that list health risks and toxic chemicals related to Electronic Cigarettes. One toxic chemical the ordinance lists that is a health concern is diethylene glycol. This toxic chemical is also used in Hydraulic fracking fluids (applications)and drilling fluids to combat problems of sticking and bit balling of downhole tools. This fluid mixture is used (preferably) up to 85 % concentrate with water not to exceed 30%. Diethylene glycol is toxic enough to be investigated for possible health concerns and written into ordinance for smoking and Electric Cigarettes. Yet, no environmental impact study regarding its toxicity( or any other chemical) with use of Hydraulic Fracking was done nor any warning to the public in any of the "where as" , the City Council investigationed--- |
