Group suspends bullying

Guyer High School’s anti-bullying committee took its message on the road Tuesday. Three Guyer staffers on the committee and the committee’s student representative, senior Ashley Thompson, were accompanied by the Guyer varsity cheerleaders to Harpool Middle School, where they led sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students in the “Bully Proof Pledge” during an afternoon pep rally.

Bartonville council OKs permit for water tower

The case of the Bartonville Water Tower took a surprising turn at Tuesday’s Town Council meeting. Council members voted to approve a conditional use permit for an elevated water tank and related facilities on a 4.7-acre tract of land known as Lot 1, Block A of the Bartonville Water Supply Addition and a zoning change from residential to public/semi-public.

County briefed on Ebola

Denton County commissioners received some positive news on the Ebola front Tuesday. Matt Richardson, director of the Denton County Health Department, and Jody Gonzalez, emergency services director, made a joint presentation to commissioners about monitoring for the virus and preparations emergency officials have made in case anything happens.

Early voting starts strong

Early voting began and started strong in Denton County on Monday. Dispute draws to close

A dispute between the Denton Fire Fighters Association and the city has come to an end after more than a year. Arbitrator John Barnard ruled this month that then-Fire Chief Ross Chadwick’s appointment of Fire Marshal Laura Behrens last year did properly fall in the guidelines of the association’s meet-and-confer agreement.

A man told police his car window was shattered by his stepdaughter’s boyfriend, according to a report. Police received a call of criminal mischief Saturday afternoon in the 400 block of Londonderry Lane. The caller said his stepdaughter’s boyfriend punched the vehicle’s window with a closed fist, causing an estimated $800 in damage.

Woman’s shooting death ruled suicide

A “suspicious death” Denton police were investigating Saturday in the 3900 block of Kirby Drive has been declared a suicide, officials said.

Living with laughter

During his last two years of high school in the 1960s, the 69-year-old said he was beat up almost daily because of his refusal to be silent about the racial injustices around him.
