Emmitt Smith: Cowboys Have Offensive Balance, Not Yet ‘Triplets’

DALLAS (105.3 THE FAN) – Former Cowboys and Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith knows a thing or two (or three) about success. His formula is simple: offensive balance.
“To be able to watch the Dallas Cowboys absolutely committing themselves to running the football has been phenomenal for me as a fan,” said Smith with Shan & RJ on 105.3 The Fan.
“Watching DeMarco Murray perform under those type of situations has been an absolute pleasure. To me, that’s the one thing the Cowboys were definitely missing was a complete running game or commitment to the running game. Now that they have it, they’re starting to see the balance that I believe is the formula for success.”
Smith was a benefactor of offensive balance in the early 90’s, playing alongside Troy Aikman and Michael Irvin. That balance led the Cowboys to three Super Bowl wins in four seasons.
But going back to the days of Tom Landry and Roger Staubach, Smith believes that balance is ingrained in the franchise’s identity — something the Cowboys have drifted from in recent years.
“Chasing after the NFL in terms of what’s popular today is something I’ve never seen the Dallas Cowboys do. I’ve always seen the Dallas Cowboys stay true to form, and unfortunately they got off track.”
Smith believes the Cowboys have the formula to be a Super Bowl contender, if they can stay healthy.
The formula starts with an offense led by Romo, Murray, and wide receiver Dez Bryant. The Cowboys had a similar formula in the early 90’s — the “Triplets”.
Is it fair to compare Dallas’ three-pronged attack with the Aikman-Smith-Irvin triplets?
“It’s too early,” said Smith. “You want to see this for the next three or four years.”
