Oklahoma Teen Killed Family Before Spending UT/OU Weekend in Dallas, Prosecutors Say

Alan Hruby is a 19-year-old shopaholic.

"There is no bigger rush then [sic] getting to the register at a store and swiping your credit card. And in that moment you are waiting for the screen to say, 'Approved' you start to get heart palpitations and you get a rush of adrenaline. By the time she is handing your stuff to you, you are so high on adrenaline, the $15,000 total does not even phase [sic] you until you've gotten home and seen the receipts," Hruby said in a now-deleted February blog post.

Hruby brags about his shoe collection, about the points he earns on his numerous credit cards. He doesn't mention the criminal charge for opening a credit card in his grandmother's name and spending $5,000 on a six-week trip to Europe provided by his parents, nor his assault of his mother two years ago after a fight about money.

According to The Oklahoman, Hruby told investigators earlier this week that he owed a Norman, Oklahoma, loan company $3,000 and that he believed he would be the sole heir to any inheritance were the rest of his family to die. So, prosecutors say, he killed them.

At a press conference, Stephens County Oklahoma District Attorney Jason Hicks described what happened October 9 at the Hruby family home in Duncan, as his office understands it.

After waiting down the block from his parents house for his mom to get home -- sitting in a Jeep given to him for his high school graduation -- Hruby came in through the back door and shot Joy Hruby twice. His sister, in the driveway washing her car, then came inside. Hruby shot Katherine Hruby in the head and waited for his dad to get home. When John Hruby got home, his son shot him as well.

Hruby then left the house, tossed the gun and home surveillance equipment into a nearby lake, and returned to the University of Oklahoma, where he is a student. Prosecutors believe Hruby killed his family with a 9mm handgun John Hruby reported being stolen from his pickup the morning of October 9. Toll booth records discovered by The Oklahoman show that Hruby traveled from Norman to Duncan and back around the time the gun was stolen, then made a second trip to Duncan hours later. During the first trip, he was pulled over and told the officer making the stop that he didn't have his driver's license. After Hruby gave the officer a fake name, he was given a ticket and allowed to continue his trip.

Beyond ditching the evidence, Hruby also left his phone in Norman, Oklahoma, as he allegedly committed the crime. If law enforcement pinged it, he thought, it would show that he -- or at least his phone -- was in his dorm room. He also tweeted several photos of the view from his dorm room the evening of October 9.

Friday, investigators say, Hruby came to Dallas for the Red River Rivalry. While here, he stayed at the Ritz-Carlton, before returning to Oklahoma.

Hruby was arrested Monday because his trip to Dallas violated the terms of his probation on the credit card charge. He was later charged with murdering his family.

"I think the only remorse he has shown is that he got caught," Hicks told members of the media Wednesday. "It's remorse because he knows his life is basically over. He's either going to be incarcerated for the rest of his life, or he'll be on death row."

I bet it's Obama's fault.

He probably had a long-standing psychosis made worse by the parents giving him material things instead of love.

First! and first to say, I wonder if he bought any neckties? Those are increasingly useless for the rest of us, much less a teenage wanna-be heir with a great shoe collection.

@lebowski300  They do, Mr. L. They just shouldn't use abortion for their primary means of birth control.

@Montemalone  Either too many whippings or not enough, depending on when you were born.

The Myrnians will tell you that it's the result of materialism. In this case, I'm inclined to agree,  although I wish the parents were around to tell their side of it. Here in the woods, however, we call it spoiling one's children, and some otherwise fine parents fall victim to it.

@bvckvs Seems like they were victims of a murderous criminal. But, you know, facts. They get in the way of idiot victim blaming.

If it seems like they were killed that way, it's because they were.  Nobody really disputes that.
